Dr. Hurst is a trained robotic surgeon offering a vast experience in robotic GI and gastric malignancies, ventral and inguinal hernias and gallbladder disease who has been honored with the recognition of being one of America’s Top Surgeons.  Born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, he completed his General Surgical training at Martin Luther King/Drew Medical Center and his Surgical Oncology training under the tutelage of world renowned surgical oncologist  Dr. Steven A. Rosenberg at the National Cancer Institute.  During his training at the King/Drew Medical Center, Dr. Hurst exemplified an unprecedented level of commitment and performance in reference to surgical education, leading  to his selection as Executive Chief resident year and earned him the prestigious recognition of best teaching resident by the Drew Medical School Class of 2000.

Dr. Hurst fostered a background in research as part of the Minorities in Biomedical Research Support (MBRS) early and throughout his Surgical Residency and Oncology Fellowship. During his Surgical Oncology Fellowship, his research efforts concentrated in tumor immunology; analyzing TCRbV usage in response to tumor vaccines for melanoma using the method of cPCR (competitive PCR) to quantitate the frequency of TCR subfamilies in PBMC.   Dr. Hurst joined the Department Surgery at the King/Drew Medical Center from 2000-2003 as Chief of the Surgical Oncology Service.  During his term, he served as the Chief of Surgical Oncology and Director of the Surgical Breast Center.  

In 2001, Dr. Hurst joined the staff at Centinela, Marina Del Rey(now Cedar-Sinai), Southern California Hospital at Culver City, and Little Company of Mary hospitals as a surgical oncologist specializing in complicated/advanced breast, colorectal, and sarcoma cancers as well as general surgery.  While at Centinela Hospital he developed and instituted the robotic program and served as the Director of the Robotic Program. Currently he is serving as Chairman  of the Department Surgery at Cedar-Sinai Marina Del Rey Hospital.

Dr. Hurst has  established an extensive community outreach program offering free lectures on breast, colon and gyn malignancies as well as free mammograms by inner-city communities from 2012-2018. This allows underserved populations to have access to state-of-the-art cancer care without leaving their community.  During the past 22 years, Dr. Hurst served in many leadership roles demonstrating his passion and commitment to advancing quality health care and physician wellness, including:
