Art of Healing

Art of Healing is the name of the art collection of the Angeles Clinic and Research Institute. This art collection, which is varied but consists most extensively of Abstract Expressionists from Los Angeles and New York. Each piece is created especially for its ability to connect with the healing journey. Abstract Expressionism was chosen as the focus of the collection because without having literal images, one can use the abstractness to fill in your own journey into the painting and experience the light and the color and the shapes and all the other components of art that reach into you creatively and help inspire your own creativity. To be perhaps the most important member of your team of healing.

The Art of Medicine

The field of medicine isn’t all about the science; there’s a delicate art to answering the tough questions, delivering news, creating a therapeutic plan, and remaining empathetic but emotionally objective enough to carry out responsibilities. This method is often referred to as ‘The Art of Medicine’. The art of medical practice refers to a clinician’s way of being when interacting with patients and families. How doctors, nurses, and health care professionals diagnose, explore treatment options, communicate, and promote healing are examples of the art of medicine. These intentions are aimed at alleviating suffering, promoting dignity, recognizing interdependency, and advancing wisdom, respectively. Medical schools are discovering that teaching the arts to medical students helps them sharpen their observational skills and teach them to be more empathetic.

Enhanced Healing Through Art

The tradition of integrating art in hospitals can be traced as far back in history to the first hospitals which were developed from hostels for pilgrims and travelers. The visit to a medical office can be difficult personally and emotionally. At The Angeles Clinic we have understood and embraced the core belief that patient well-being and satisfaction can be enhanced through the presence of art in the care environment. Recent studies have supported the principle that art contributes to creating an environment and atmosphere where patients can feel safe, socialize, maintain a connection to the world outside the hospital and support their identity. We conclude that the presence of visual art throughout a patient journey contributes to health outcomes by improving patient satisfaction as an extended form of health care.

Art in Oncology

Art in Oncology has been a major breakthrough in recent times. Discovering simple, effective, therapeutic interventions, to aid in distress relief in cancer patients, is important for ensuring clinical efficacy of treatment and improved quality of life. Cancer is a life-altering diagnosis. Surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy can be effective in treating the tumor, but these modalities are not designed to treat the mental effects, which can be just as debilitating. Recent studies have uncovered the clinical pearl that art therapy improved the emotional distress, depression, anxiety, and pain among all cancer patients, at all time points. Improvement in depression scores were seen. We have seen that populations derive greater benefits as Hispanic patients were noted to derive a greater improvement in depression scores from art therapy over time, compared to non-Hispanics patients.
